Anecdotal Report

Mrs. Yoo Se-mi is an excellent teacher who has extraordinary skills in orally illustrating the basic grammatical rules along with the supplementary nuances and exceptions. The vernacular and body language that she adopts allows for any student, regardless of their Korean language proficiency, to quickly learn Japanese.

 

Although stressful, the questions that Mrs. Yoo Se-mi asks the students before the main lesson provides them the opportunity to strengthen their speaking and listening skills alongside their reading and writing skills. I found this extremely attractive as I did not have easy access to native Japanese friends to practice any lingual skills or comprehension with. Mrs. Yoo Se-mi would also oftentimes establish a connection in our brains by asking personal questions while adhering to the main lesson. For instance, when we first learned the past, present, and future tense transformations of verbs in Japanese, the teacher would ask us what we did the day before what we were planning on doing in the following days. The direct-feedback nature of her lessons also ensured clarity with any bits of confusion, whether it be with the different particles or transformations. 

 

One aspect of Mrs. Yoo Se-mi's classes that I did not completely agree with was the discouragement of the usage of kanji. Not only do the textbooks use kanji whenever available, but the vocabulary sheets alongside the homework that she provides also features kanji whenever available. I did not like this, as I believe kanji, just like hiragana or katakana, is a crucial pillar of the Japanese language, as illustrated by our most recent lesson. The confusion between みたい and 見たい can only be differentiated through both context clues and, more notably, the kanji. Though Mrs. Yoo Se-mi discourages the use of kanji, she still allows its usage as long as the student writes the hiragana pronunciation on top of the kanji letters (I personally recommend future students adopt this approach, as you familiarize yourself with the kanji without sacrificing your hiragana familiarity).

 

Another aspect of Mrs. Yoo Se-mi's class is its pacing; homework along with any incomplete questions in the textbook during class are absolutely required to finish before the next lesson. Each lesson is seemingly built off of the previous unit, meaning that any confusion at the beginning means both short and long-term difficulty. An example of this is when we were leaning the ~て verb transformations. The subsequent lessons stemmed directly from that unit, making clarity (that Mrs. Yoo Se-mi enthusiastically provides) an absolute must before moving on to the next unit.

 

The payoffs of attending Mrs. Yoo Se-mi's class is glaringly noticeable. Previously, my main method of Japanese acquisition was through listening to Japanese music, but attending Mrs. Yoo Se-mi's classes helped me comprehend much more of the music that I listen to. The same is true for any anime or Japanese TV shows that I watch; I am now able to more accurately discern between the vocabulary and grammatical patterns when consuming any form of Japanese media. Attending Mrs. Yoo Se-mi's class also helped deconstruct any old bad habits and misunderstandings whilst reinforcing the proper and correct methods for each habit/misunderstanding.

 

I highly recommend upcoming students to attend Mrs. Yoo Se-mi's class. As a student preparing to spend my next four years in Japan, I can confidently say that I feel much more ease because of the lessons that Mrs. Yoo Se-mi ingrained in me.
